Research on Video Counselling
Berryhill et al., 2019 looked at prior research on video counselling for depression. They found 22 studies showing that clients reported reduced symptoms of depression after doing online therapy. They also reviewed studies showing that video counselling was as effective for addressing depression as in-person counselling.
Fletcher et al., 2018 reviewed past research on video counselling for a variety of issues, including trauma, depression, and substance abuse. They found that, in these studies, online counselling appeared to be as effective as face-to-face counselling. The researchers also reported that clients were satisfied with the help they received through video counselling.
Simpson and Reid (2014) summarized research on the client-counsellor relationship in video counselling. They found that clients reported feeling like their counsellor was present with them during online therapy. Many client also described feeling a close bond with their therapist.
